Pandora has inked a partnership with local supermarket giant Woolworths to see its playlists soundtrack the shopping experiences of over 17 million customers a week.

Woolworths Radio – Powered by Pandora will see curated stations streamed in over 970 supermarkets in Australia every day.

Woolworths Radio will be refreshed and updated regularly using Pandora’s Music Genome Project, a hand-built algorithm which uses up to 450 distinct musical characteristics to describe songs, and is analysed by a trained musical analyst. The stations created for shoppers will also be made available for Pandora users.

Pandora told TMN the Music Genome Project, as with all of Pandora’s programming, will see a “significant number of Australian artists” featured onWoolworths Radio.

Pandora ANZ director of business development Rick Gleave told TMN: “The Woolworths deal has 12-day parts, and pulls from a number of music seeds that will include Australian artists. All playlists will be updated regularly to reflect the media diary or events (Xmas etc).”

The deal runs for three years and includes in-store point of sale displays to encourage shoppers to download the Pandora app.

Gleave said in a statement: “This partnership extends Pandora’s ability to bring a unique selection of music experiences to every listener in Australia, whether through their own earbuds on the go, in their car, or when they are shopping for the family at Woolworths. As we continue to scale, this illustrates the joy Pandora can bring to every listener in the country no matter where they are. Woolworths provides a unique and new environment for music from Pandora.”

Pandora worked with business partner Mood Media to install the software. As a global in-store media provider, Mood Media’s focal points include branded music, visual content, scent technology, radio and digital signage services. Its clients include David Jones, Myer, City Beach, Kmart and BWS.

In March last year Pandora and Mood Media rolled out Pandora’s services across all of BWS’ Australian stores, including Dan Murphy’s, Cellarmasters, and Pinnacle Liquor.
