Nine years on, Taylor Swift’s ’Fearless’ is certified Diamond for U.S. sales of 10 million

While Taylor’s Swift’s current album Reputation breaks sales and streaming records, her second album Fearless from nine years ago is also creating waves.

It has just been certified Diamond by the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) for clocking up U.S. sales of 10 million.

Released Stateside November 11, 2008, Fearless debuted at #1 in America (her first U.S. chart topper), moving 592,000 copies in its first week – a rarity for a country performer.

But Fearless moved her instantly from country crossover to major pop superstar.

It yielded five hit singles. These included ‘Love Story’ (6.1 million in America and 8.1 million worldwide), ‘You Belong With Me’ and the title track.

It won her four Grammys, including for Album of the Year (the youngest to win it, and beating out favourites Black Eyed Peas and Beyoncé). It also took Best Country Album and Best Country Song.

In America Fearless went on to become 2009’s biggest selling record, at the time with a tally of 3.2 million. Worldwide at the time it had done 12 million.

Its sales have been ticking over since then. Of course, the record is now on streaming services finding new fans, which has helped nudge the 10 million mark.

In Australia Fearless peaked at #2 on the ARIA Top 100 and #1 on the country charts.

It was also the 4th biggest selling record of 2009, and has since sold well over 500,000 units.

As of last year, 90 records had been certified Diamond.

These included game-changers as Michael Jackson’s Thriller, Bruce Springsteen’s Born In The USA, AC/DC’s Back In Black, Usher’s Confessions, Adele’s 21 and 25, Prince’s Purple Rain, The Beatles’ Abbey Road, The Beatles (The White Album) and Sgt Peppers, Led Zeppelin II and IV, Nirvana’s Nevermind, the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack, Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of The Moon and The Wall, TLC’s CrazySexyCool, Guns N’Roses’ Appetite For Destruction, Carole King’s Tapestry, Eminem’s The Marshall Mathers LP, Madonna’s Like a Virgin, Stevie Wonder’s Songs in the Key of Life, Green Day’s Dookie and Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours.

However, those with more than a Diamond certified only number 22.

There’s no reason not to believe that Swift will join this club.

Her1989 album has already sold 9 million and is still finding thousands of new fans on streaming.

Reputation too could end up with similar sales. It has also done three million in its first month, already becoming America’s top seller of 2017.

Of the singles, ‘Look What You Made Me Do’ also reached 3X platinum, and ‘…Ready for It?’ just achieved platinum.
