I’m continually blown away by the talent that turns up in triple j Unearthed’s annual Unearthed High contest – and that’s not restricted to past winners like Lunatics On Pogosticks, Snakadaktal and Stonefield, but also finalists that are making meaningful moves in the local scene like Montaigne, Vancouver Sleep Clinic and Glass Towers. The 2014 crop featured a particularly impressive group of over-achieving youngsters and was ultimately taken out by Melbourne’s Japanese Wallpaper, a superlatively gifted bedroom producer who is still stuck in Year 11.

Since bowing on his triple j Unearthed profile at the start of September Between Friends has quickly become a favourite on air with some serene xylo vibes underpinning an instantly memorable vocal from Jesse Davidson, a former Unearthed High finalist coincidentally. Japanese Wallpaper had big things to prove after the break-out Breath In ft. Wafia last year but this new one just cements how big of a talent this kid is.
