Sia signs on with Atlantic Records, exits Sony

Australian artist Sia has severed ties with label Sony Music Entertainment, signing a worldwide deal with Warner Music’s Atlantic Records.

Recent albums 1000 Forms Of Fear, released in 2014, and the more recent This Is Acting (2016) have been licensed to Sony from her own label Monkey Puzzle.

Locally, Sia’s platinum-selling catalogue has been distributed by Australian independent label Inertia. According to reports, Sia’s back catalogue is remaining with the Aussie indie.

TMN reached out to Inertia for comment but reps did not respond in time for publication.

Marking her debut release under the Monkey Puzzle/Atlantic banner, Sia has co-created a Christmas album with songwriter Greg Kurstin.

The album, described as “a collection of original holiday songs” does not have a title or specific release date.

Last year, Sia’s management company, Crush Management, entered into a partnership with Warner to establishFuture Crush Music, presumably paving the way for the singer’s arrival at Warner. Crush represent around 20 artists, includingLorde, Panic At The Discoand Aloe Blacc.

In a joint statement by Atlantic Records CEO Craig Kallman and COO Julie Greenwald, the pair say they are are excited to continue the singer’s musical journey from where Sony left off.

“Sia is a once-in-a-generation artist. Her extraordinary gifts as a singer and songwriter, her revolutionary approach to the art of performing, her groundbreaking videos – everything she does comes from a deep wellspring of inspiration and imagination.”

With smash singles ‘Chandelier’ and ‘Elastic Heart’, Sia has been the staple point for Australian artists at radio. ‘Chandelier’ and ‘Elastic Heart’ both peaked at #2 on TMN’s Hot 100 chart, while her featured appearance on Flo Rida’s ‘Wild Ones’ saw the track hit #1 for six consecutive weeks.

’Cheap Thrills’ remains in the TMN Hot100 this week at #77, following a 74-week run on the airplay-based chart.

Siais also directing her first feature film, based on a one-page story she wrote eight years ago. It is for her frequent collaborator Maddie Ziegler.

Sia has previouslyadmitted, “I was too embarrassed to tell anyone I wanted to make a movie, because I thought it would be seen as a vanity project, because I was a singer.

“And then after I made the ‘Chandelier’ video, I realised that I was pretty good at directing, so I felt a little bit braver.”
