Spoon
Do You
(Spunk/Caroline)

If we were in the northern hemisphere, this could be our indie summer anthem. We’re not, so it’s not, but that doesn’t mean Spoon’s first new track in four years isn’t amazing.

It’s catchy, uncomplicated power-pop that sees Britt Daniel get back to his straight-forward best after the decidedly arty turn he took with the excellent supergroup Divine Fits.

This creative detour has clearly refreshed Daniel and the rest of the band. The veteran indie rockers don’t sound like veterans at all on Do You. The frightfully catchy "do-do-do-do-do-do-do" hook, the breezy, lightly strummed guitars and the fact that you can’t hear it without smiling and nodding your head make it seem as if Spoon are back to their best. They might well be.

Their last record, 2010’s Transference, was their most commercially successful to date. With a song as good as Do You leading the charge, the band’s forthcoming They Want My Soul (due August 1) should better it.
