Briggs calls on punters to vote for ’January 26’ in Triple M’s new ’Ozzest 100’ countdown
Briggs has called on the Australian public to “ruin” Triple M’s new Australia Day countdown by voting for his song ’January 26’.
The track was written and recorded by Briggs and Trials as their collaborative duo A.B. Original, and also features Dan Sultan.
Triple M yesterday announced their own Australia Day song countdown the ’Ozzest 100’ in light of triple j’s decision to move their publicly voted Hottest 100 countdown to January 27 from Australia Day
The Hottest 100 date change was made official last month after a public consultation process where 64,990 listeners weighed in with their opinions.
60% of participants voted to change the date as it was to culturally insensitive to Indigenous Australians and their supporters who consider it Invasion Day, or a day of mourning rather than one of celebration.
“We should ruin Triple M’s redneck countdown,” Briggs tweeted, before imploring people to “stick @ABOriginalBAM & @dansultan January 26 right in the middle of their cross burning.”
Briggs was holding no prisoners in his assessment of the reactionary decision by Triple M to hold the new countdown, accusing the station of “pandering to white nationalists & racists.”
He later posted the link to the voting submission page.“Let’s ruin their party. Vote for us!” he wrote.
‘January 26’ was the lead single from A.B. Original’s ARIA-nominated debut album Reclaim Australia, which featured guest spots by Thelma Plum, Archie Roach and Dr G Yunupingu.
The track also came in at #16 in triple j’s Hottest 100 countdown of 2017.
