Scarcely has there been more controversy surroundingtriple j’s long-standing yearlyHottest 100countdown, but that only seems to have driven more voters to have their say in the 2017 countdown.

Stats released by triple j reveal that after voting closed yesterday, there had been 2,286,133 votes cast, the most ever cast in the Hottest 100, and up 5.81% from the year prior.

This year saw the most votes come from NSW, with 29% of the vote. Victoria had 23% of voters while Qld had 20% to round out the top three.

80% of voters were under 30, while the most common age of voters was 21.

More females voted than males in this year’s countdown, with 51% of respondents female compared to 48% male (and 1% ‘other’ or ‘no answer’).

After a lengthy consultation with listeners last year, triple j changed the date of the countdown. 60% of listeners voted to change the date, with the countdown having been held on January 26 since 2004.

The controversial move has even seen politicians speak out against the date being changed, withCory Bernardicreating his now-infamous Australian Conservatives playlist, while within the industry Triple M announced it would be holding its own new countdown,The Ozzest 100.

The 2017 triple j Hottest 100 takes place down this Saturday, January 27.
