MTV lists Lorde, Sia, among Video Music Awards nominees, ditches gendered categories

Remember when people lost their minds over the fact Lorde took out the VMA for Best Rock Video in 2014 for ‘Royals’? The New Zealand export became the first woman to win the Moon Man and now she’s up for two awards, Artist of the Year and Best Editing for ‘Green Light’, which she created with director Grant Singer.

Shot on 16mm film around MacArthur Park in Los Angeles, Lorde told Zane Lowe the concept for the track is, “that drunk girl at the party dancing around crying about her ex-boyfriend who everyone thinks is a mess.”

The clip was edited by Nate Gross of Exile Edit.

Meanwhile Sia is nominated in the category she took out in 2015 with ‘Chandelier’, Best Choreography. This year, it’s her clip for ‘The Greatest’, which features Sia’s longtime on screen avatar Maddie Ziegler. The choreography was devised by Ryan Heffington, who tapped 49 dancers to bring Sia’s concept to life.

Interestingly, Sia has never publicly spoken about the concept of the clip, but it’s believed to be connected to the massacre of 49 people at an Orlando gay bar in June.

MTV announced the nominations for the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards exclusively on Instagram Live.

Kendrick Lamar scored eight nominations for ‘HUMBLE’, while Katy Perry and The Weeknd are tied with five nominations each.

MTV also ditched the former Best Female Video and Best Male Video categories, and combined the two  for Artist of the Year. Should Lorde take out the Award over Bruno Mars, Kendrick Lamar, Ed Sheeran, Ariana Grande and The Weeknd, she’ll make history once again with another VMA first.

It’s also added the Award Best Fight Against the System to celebrate videos that inspire action against injustice.

The Awards will air live from the “Fabulous” Forum in Inglewood, Calif. on August 27.
