MTV Brand New Artist Spotlight: At Sunset

MTV Brand New is the youth brand’s new national competition which gives some of the hottest Australian and New Zealand artists the chanceto break internationally. TMN is featuring a nominated artist each week.

Considering At Sunset’s adolescence, it’s surprising to learn just how long they’ve been in the music industry, albeit via unconventional channels.

Andrew Kantarias has a background in musicals, his brother Harrison has been playing guitar since age seven and Tom Jay Williams made his debut as the youngest ever Top 10 finalist on Australian Idol in 2008. A year later Williams was sharing the stage with John Farnham and in 2010 he opened for Shannon Noll, Stan Walker and Jessica Mauboy. In 2013, before joining At Sunset, Williams opened for Billboard-charting Sydney band 5 Seconds of Summer.

Now, the trio have amassed five million views on YouTube; 300,000 combined Twitter followers and 950,000 combined Facebook followers – not bad for a band who had only released covers up until this point.

The band have since toured with singer-songwriter Reece Mastin, featured on children’s television show Saturday Disney, headlined the Teen Rush tour and caught the attention of Stadium-touring, global chart topper Ed Sheeran and US actress/singer Zendaya.

Most important though, is the non-conformist and infectious nature of their original work. Their single Every Little Thing features on the 2015 edition of 100% Hits and the band’s hype has spread so deep across the Atlantic it warranted a US promotional tour, complete with interviews with Ryan Seacrest, Tiger Beat Magazine and The Rhonde Show.

Having just signed with Warner Music Australia, 2015 is the year of accessible pop, and At Sunset is leading the charge.
