Men at Work, Dean Lewis & Sticky Fingers among most popular Aussie acts on Instagram Stories

Last year Instagram secured licensing deals with major music players, allowing users to add a song to their Stories.

The photo-sharing platform has now released some local data that paints a picture of what hits Australian’s love to share using the popular music stickers feature.

Men At Work’s 38-year old ‘Down Under’ is one of the Top 5 Australian songs attached to Stories.

Hits by Ziggy Alberts, Ocean Alley, Sticky Fingers and Dean Lewis are also favourites.

But as 10 Daily points out, the ten most popular tracks used by Aussies are from overseas.

‘Wow’ by Post Malone, ‘Sunset Lover’ by Petit Biscuit, ’Happier’ by Marshmello ft. Bastille, ’I Like It’ by Cardi B, ’Thotiana’ by Blueface, ’Sicko Mode’ by Travis Scott & Drake, ’Without Me’ by Halsey, ’Better’ by Khalid, ’Thank u, next’ by Ariana Grande and ‘Sweet But Psycho’ by Ava Max.

5 FACTS ABOUT ‘DOWN UNDER’

(1) With colourful tourist-y phrases as “vegemite sandwich”, “fried-out Kombie” and “men chunder”, it’s not surprising it’s a song to reach foreigners.

(2) It gets played at national sporting events or when Aussies like to remind the world we’re the greatest.

But like Bruce Springsteen’s ‘Born In The USA’ or Ice Cube’s ‘It’s A Good Day’, it’s not a patriotic song but in fact something hostile – an angry political song that politicians are giving Australia away to greedy people.

(3) Icehouse’s Iva Davies said he wrote ‘Great Southern Land’ as a backlash as what he calls the “clichés perpetuating the Aussie myth” on ‘Down Under’. Men At Work’s Colin Hay and Greg Ham got their revenge by playing a practical joke on Iva at an awards ceremony.

(4) The original version of the song ran for six minutes.

The idea of the ‘Kookaburra’ flute riff only came into the song when hey were recording it in the studio. The ensuing court case cost $4.5 million.

(5) ‘Down Under’ was a smash hit around the world and sold 2 million copies in the US alone But Colin Hay is not the only international rock star in his family. His niece is Sia Furler.
