Laurie Anderson, St. Vincent, Jagwar Ma… and Twin Peaks inspired Bang Bang Bar confirmed for Dark Mofo

The demoniac winter Dark Mofo – which sold 80,000 tickets last year – has again unveiled a program of 750 experimental and risk taking artists.

They include Laurie Anderson celebrating language and stories in a virtual reality work  through live music, video, spoken word and electronics.

St. Vincent recreates her Masseduction album, while here’s metal underground band Electric Wizard, influential techno act Autechrem and the team-up of Archie Roach and Tiddas.

Ambient composer and musician William Basinski will perform solo while his The Disintegration Loop swill be  performed by a live orchestra

Canadian electro-punk purveyor and former Crystal Castles member Alice Glass teams with electronic goth-pop singer Zola Jesus.

Jagwar Ma, who’ve been off the road since their UK tour last year, return in a partnership with Red Bull Music for a curated collection of live artists, DJs and visual artists.

Lou Reed’s Drones is based around his guitars and amps, as 24 strings are activated by magnetic cones, they unleash cascading and colliding waves of feedback.

Inuk performer, torch singer and punk activist Tanya Tagaq performs her Retribution album, backed by a full choir.

Einstürzende Neubauten, who on stage during their 2017 show asked to be invited back this year got their wish, performing their 2014 album Lament, in full a blistering requiem for the outbreak of World War I exactly 100 years ago.

Japanese artist Ryoji Ikeda brings back the spectra, shooting beams of light 15km over Hobart.

The shadow of David Lynch’s Twin Peaks returns in another form.

Last year US band Xiu Xiu recreated the shows Angelo Badalamenti spooky TV score.

This year Dark Mofo will recreate the Bang Bang Bar, the Twin Peaks Roadhouse, in the Ocean Theatre precinct.

It will be where Rebekah del Rio, Tiny Ruins (both who’ve been seen on screen performing at the real thing), Marlon Williams, Blixa Bargeld, Brutal Measures (Lydia Lunch & Weasel Walter) Swans collaborator Jarboe, Jess Ribeiro and Laura Jean will play – the sort of acts he bar in Washington would book,

Dark Mofo creative director Leigh Carmichael said that in the festival’s sixth year “We’ve pulled together our most expansive lineup yet, spread over three weekends and presenting more than 750 artists, 22 exhibitions, two opera companies, two theatre companies, one puppet theatre company, one orchestra, and a community choir.

“It’s always difficult to know exactly how the festival will unfold for the audience.

“We just strive to try and find new ways to experience the darkness, and hope that people will continue to embrace it, and enjoy Hobart’s longest nights.”

Dark Mofo is in Hobart from June 12-24.
