Kylie Minogue’s ‘Padam Padam’ Reigns Over Spotify’s Inaugural Australian Music Rankings

Kylie Minogue’s ‘Padam Padam’ Reigns Over Spotify’s Inaugural Australian Music Rankings

The Princess of Pop, Kylie Minogue, is crowned on Spotify Australia’s inaugural rankings of top Aussie acts.

Unveiled today (July 24), Kylie reigns over the Australian Music Global Impact List, which rates the top 30 tunes from homegrown artists with the biggest global impact on the streaming music platform from the first half of 2023.

Kylie’s U.K. top 10 hit “Padam Padam” is the champion, ahead of The Kid LAROI’s “Love Again” and Empire Of The Sun’s “We Are The People (southstar Remix),” respectively.

Minogue’s hypnotic hit has moved music fans everywhere, particularly in her adopted home, the U.K., where the track has a No. 8 peak, and dips 10-14 on the latest Official U.K. Singles Chart.

The tune led the U.K.’s Official Singles Sales Chart and Download Chart.

In the U.S., it’s gathering steam ahead of the Sept. 22 release of its parent album Tension, via BMG.

Ariana Grande lip-synced the song on her socials for London Pride Day, Vice President Kamala Harris has been spotted dancing to it, and the tune has cracked the top 10 on the U.S. Hot Dance/Electronic Songs survey.

Spotify’s new list is weighted, includes streams across the brand’s 180-plus markets, and is combined with other signals like Follows, Saves and more.

Dance and pop make a strong showing in the top 10, while newcomers and rising talent is dotted up and down the list, including.

“The Australian music industry is now bigger than it ever has been, thanks to streaming,” comments Spotify Australia head of music Alicia Sbrugnera in a statement.

“In an age of an emerging borderless music industry, this list is a fantastic snapshot of local artists having a big impact on the world stage and comes as Australia looks to become a net exporter of music. Last year Australian artists generated close to 80% of their royalties from outside of Australia.”

Australia’s recorded music market is ranked among the top 10, according to the IFPI, and is powered by streaming.

According to ARIA, Australia’s record biz enjoyed a 16-year high in calendar 2022, posting wholesale revenue of $609.6 million, up 7.4% from the year-before period.

Spotify and its myriad competitors generated $410.7 million in combined revenue, up 8.9%, the trade body reported back in March.

Since then, Spotify has announced by way of its Loud And Clear report that revenue generated by Australian artists on its service climbed to nearly $250 million last year.

That’s nothing short of “explosive growth,” the Sweden-originated tech company’s founder and CEO Daniel Ek recently said.
