Kanye West reportedly submitting music for the Grammys’ rock categories

The 2019 Grammy Awards ceremony could be rife with controversy, with Kanye West reportedly submitting songs for the awards’ rock music categories.

Just a couple of weeks ago, the Internet was ablaze with discussion in regards to how Migos won a rock award at the American Music Awards. Migos, a hip-hop trio, were nominated alongside the likes of Imagine Dragons and Maroon 5 for ‘Favourite Duo Or Group’ in the pop/rock category.

However, when the trio won the award, the music-loving public instantly shot back, wondering out loud when Drake might be receiving his jazz award, and other unlikely honours. Now though, it seems like next year could see history repeat, with Kanye West reportedly gunning for a win in the Grammys’ rock music categories.

As TMZ reports, sources have revealed that the folks at Def Jam Recordings have submitted ‘Freeee (Ghost Town, Pt. 2)’ for the ‘Best Rock Song’ and ‘Best Rock Performance’ categories at the Grammys.

The track – one of seven from Kanye’s Kids See Ghosts collaboration with Kid Cudi – features vocals from Ty Dolla $ign and has been considered one of the record’s best tracks.

While it is indeed a hip-hop song at heart, it seems that Kanye and co. are hoping that the tune’s use of drums and guitars to help it get over the line.

TMZ also notes that the track has apparently made it past the initial acceptance process and is already on the first round ballot that voters have received. Reportedly, Kanye is also aiming for a ‘Producer Of The Year’ nod, but considering the fact he worked on five albums in five weeks earlier this year, that one might be a little bit justified.

Of course, this isn’t the first time that an artist has been nominated for a rather inexplicable award. Why, you might remember how back in 2015, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard’s Quarters! was nominated for Best Jazz Album at the ARIAs.

The following year, the genre-defying band were in the news again when they took home the award for Best Hard Rock/Metal Album for their eighth album, Nonagon Infinity, causing numerous traditionally-heavy bands to defend the group’s win.

The 2019 edition of the Grammy Awards are set to take place in February of 2019. Whether or not Kanye West’s name will appear under the ‘Best Rock Song’ and ‘Best Rock Performance’ categories remains to be seen, but stranger things have definitely happened.
