Island of Ibiza threatening to sue new Netflix Ibiza movie

The government of the EDM mecca island of Ibiza is looking at its options to sue the makers of the new Ibiza movie, The Hollywood Reporter said.

The Netflix movie stars Gillian Jacobs (Love), Phoebe Robinson (2 Dope Queens) and Vanessa Bayer (Saturday Night Live alum) as three American besties who’re on a business trip to Barcelona to snare a client for one of their employers.

However, the three get side-tracked when they met a dreamy DJ (Game Of Thrones Richard Madden) whom they decide to pursue to Ibiza where he’s performing.

In between all this sistah-bonding, they do drugs, and one has a quickie with a married man.

Ibiza seldom goes beyond generic but it does have some snappy one-liners and the stars look like they’re having fun.

The authorities of Ibiza are far from impressed, and locals have taken to social media to complain about what a rip-off the movie is.

They claim the movie perpetuates the sort of pool party kitsch that Ibiza’s tourism board has been trying to contest.

Even worse, the movie was never filmed in Ibiza, but in Croatia.

The Hollywood Reporter quotes an Ibiza local, Guenolee Roger, as saying: “They tried to film the movie here and get the island to collaborate, but the Consel d’Eivissa gave them a firm NO after reading the script, because they felt that it was terrible PR for the island and totally opposite to the kind of tourism they are trying to encourage, which is more than just clubbing and partying.”

An event planner Joanna Carlson also told the magazine: “I think what most people are responding to is not only the physical misrepresentation of our beautiful island, but also the incredibly insulting portrayal of the culture and people on the island.

“It basically only shows one throbbing club, a fake Ibiza sunset, practically empty streets and two locals — a taxi driver who takes them to his house in the country for a song and a drink [not even Hierbas, the traditional aperitif] and a scantily clad go-go dancer.”
