Imogen Clark takes us behind the scenes of ‘My Own Worst Enemy’

Imogen Clark takes us behind the scenes of ‘My Own Worst Enemy’

Aim high, you never know what target you’ll hit. Imogen Clark scored big-time on her latest single ‘My Own Worst Enemy,’ which dropped earlier this month and is lifted from her forthcoming EP.

‘Enemy’ was co-written by rising star Alex Lahey, who also lends guitar and synth to the track, and features Benmont Tench (Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers) on keys, and Pete Thomas, drummer with Rock And Roll Hall of Famer Elvis Costello on drums.

In an exclusive video shared today by The Industry Observer, Clark recounts the serendipitous moment where she sat down with Thomas and played him a list of inspirational tunes she’d assembled for the band.

“That’s great,” he told the Blue Mountains-bred singer and songwriter, “because I played on two of these tracks.”

Thomas’ input on ‘Enemy,’ she recounts, “gives us the propulsion and his particular energy that we knew was going to make it great.”

‘My Own Worst Enemy’ is the second single from Imogen Clark’s forthcoming six-track EP The Making Of Me, following the release of lead single ‘Found Me’ back in May. The EP is scheduled for release August 21st via Potts Entertainment/MGM and is available to pre-order.

In the new behind-the-scenes clip, the New South Wales artist walks us through the writing sessions with Lahey.

The pair met up in Nashville while Clark was on tour, caught up for some drinks at a dive bar and clearly got on like a house on fire. A few months later, the pair hooked up for a writing session in Melbourne.

“The song we wrote felt so natural coming out,” says Clark. “We both had had similar experiences with relationships so we talked about it and it all came flowing out of us very quickly. I think you can hear that flow in the final track.”

The final cut also features elements of Lahey’s demo. “It gives a flavour of her personal style in my song,” notes Clark.

The alt-country artist hasn’t shut it down during the pandemic, with her ticketed LIVE FROM THE BACKYARD virtual tour wrapping up last Saturday, June 27th.

The release next month of The Making Of Me caps a sparkling four-year stretch during which time Clark released two full length studio albums (Collide in 2018 and Love & Lovely Lies in 2016), bagged multiple CMC Music Award nominations, was shortlisted for APRA’s prestigious Vanda & Young Songwriting competition and given an honourable mention in the Nashville-based International Songwriting Competition.

Prior to the lockdown, Clark toured relentlessly on both sides the globe, sharing the stage with the likes of Shania Twain, Ian Moss, Diesel and many more.

And in 2019, she won the country category for the APRA Professional Development Awards, earning applause from Kasey Chambers as “an old soul, well beyond her years”.
