Good Neighbour Expands With U.S. Signings and ‘Many More’ to Come
Good Neighbour, the neighbouring rights division of Mushroom Group, expands its activities abroad with a string of new artists signings, including Andy Grammer, Max Frost, Khruangbin and Uffie.
Welcoming the new arrivals from the United States, Susan Cotchin, managing director of Good Neighbour, comments: “Neighbouring rights is an important and growing industry, one we’ve championed for since 1999, and we’re proud that the world’s most experienced agency is making a difference to performers incomes across the globe.”
Those acts have signed up for worldwide neighbouring rights representation, according to reps.
The new signings follow recent deals with U.S. and international acts Cold War Kids, Zedd, Wallows, Michelle Branch, Madeleine Peyroux and Shungudzo, with “many more to be announced later this year,” reads a statement issued this week.
While the live entertainment industry was hobbled by the pandemic, Good Neighbour experience a period of growth.
According to the business, its results were up 34% between 2020 to early 2022, and growth is forecast at 67% in 2023.
The increase, explains the company, is due to Good Neighbour’s “intimate understanding of neighbouring rights and the implementation of a more efficient royalty claim procedure,” which has enabled the organisation to secure better financial outcomes for its clients.
Cotchin adds, “We used the downtime throughout 2020 to squeeze more juice out of the fruit for performers, showing that twenty-four years of neighbouring rights experience and the know-how delivers royalty dividends to musicians.”
The Perth-raised, Melbourne-based entrepreneur is a pioneer in neighbouring rights, the performance right in sound recordings which are paid out to performers and master owners.
A former artist, Cotchin earned her stripes in the U.K. with the not-for-profit Performing Artists Media Rights Association (PAMRA), now part of PPL, the equivalent of Australia’s PPCA.
In May 2003, Cotchin launched her own specialist company, International Royalties Rescue (IRR), and in 2019 formed a joint venture with Mushroom Group on Good Neighbour.
Good Neighbour has worked with the likes of Amy Shark, Empire of the Sun, Kylie Minogue, Neil Finn & Crowded House, John Farnham and many others.
