Sonny Fodera may have finished a national tour, but it was the DJ's first-ever Australian pop-up that gave his fans a real taste of his euphoric style.

Fodera, who returned to Australia for a run of shows celebrating the release of his sixth album, Can We Do It All Again?, decided to include a surprise performance, taking over the Clubhouse at North Bondi Surf Life Saving Club on Friday, October 23rd.

The gig was a notable deviation from the large-scale venues Fodera typically plays, having headlined Big Weekend and Creamfields, and completed a UK arena tour this year alone. Instead, the Adelaide-born DJ gave his fans a more intimate experience of his vocal-led productions, playing an hour-and-a-half set to the 250-person crowd as the sun set behind him over Bondi Beach.

“The energy was amazing throughout,” a Vodafone representative told Rolling Stone AU/NZ. “A real standout was seeing fans dancing down on the beach and Sonny interacting with them from the rooftop.”

Fodera’s set included ARIA chart-topping single “Think About Us” and international fan favourite “Somedays”. Before the show, he sat down with Rolling Stone AU/NZ to explain his preparation for the show. And though he had a plan for the setlist, it was clear a lot of his performance would come down to the crowd.

“At festivals, especially ones with over 40,000 people, you want to keep the energy high,” he explained. “But when you’ve got 250 people in a room, it’s going to be more about dancing and having a good time.”

“I’ll probably put about 100 tracks into a playlist and just wing it.”
