EXCLUSIVE: Melbourne’s G Flip to breakout at SXSW 2018

Just over a week into launching her music career, Georgia Flipo, aka Melbourne artist G Flip is headed to iconic global music industry event SXSW in Austin, TIO can exclusively reveal.

Normally a signpost event for local artists who have made enough noise locally to warrant an overseas expedition, SXSW is a chance to lock in international label and booking deals and showcase all the reasons why your home country already love you.

But G Flip is a prime example of our current music industry, where the release of one single via local youth broadcaster triple j Unearthed can lead to international fervour.

On February 13, G Flip uploaded her track ‘About You’ to triple j Unearthed. The same day, local blog The Interns picked it up. A day later Purple Sneakers and Junkee had published articles about the track. Three days later Pitchfork featured the song as their ‘Best New Track’ and Texas-based blog Gorilla vs. Bear published the video.

The clip now has over 167,000 views on YouTube and was added to the YouTube ‘New Music This Week’ playlist, which has 99 million subscribers.

Back on Unearthed, ‘About You’ clocked over 2,000 plays in a week, and her profile received over 15,000 visits. According to the ABC, the visits are from 73 countries, including Lithuania, Madagascar, Qatar, Nepal, French Polynesia and Uganda.

TIO can reveal G Flip has signed a management deal with Future Classic (Flume, Nick Murphy, Flight Facilities).

Speaking to TIO, Future Classic’s A&R/Artist Manager Dan Zilber said:

“Georgia sent an email to the Future Classic demos inbox! Initially I was intrigued by the picture on her SoundCloud (her and a kick drum with a stencil face drawn on – both looking emo), clicked on the link, fell for the song on first listen and emailed her back knowing I’d be flying to Melbourne to meet her ASAP.”
Previously the drummer of defunct Melbourne rock trio EMPRA, G Flip has over a decade of drumming experience under her belt. Now, after a year of being holed away creating this solo opus, G Flip is frog-leaping over the oft-travelled national touring circuit and is headed straight to one of the largest and most influential music events in the world.
Future Classic has included G Flip on its official SXSW Showcase, which takes over Australia House (Lucille’s Patio Lounge) on March 15 with GERMANS, JPEGMAFIA, Marco McKinnis and SASSY 009 on the bill.
“I want people to get to know her,” Dan Zilber tells TIO. “She’s very endearing and charismatic. Everyone she meets falls for her frenetic enthusiasm and refreshingly unfiltered perspective. She’s totally authentic and with no pretence at all.
“In terms of what she gets out of [SXSW], I hope she has lots of fun, works hard (I don’t know if I’ve met an artist that works harder) and realises it’s just the start of something really special.”
