Electric Gardens’ Damian Gelle on bringing Amnesia from Ibiza: “every Australian should experience it at least once!”

Ibiza superclub Amnesia makes its Australian debut in summer as part of Sydney’s EDM festival Electric Gardens on Saturday, January 26.

Headlining the Amnesia Australia bill on the Centennial Parklands terrace is man-of-the-moment Patrick Topping with an extended three-hour set.

He is joined by UK house, disco and techno whiz Eats Everything, Matador and Mar-T who’s been a resident DJ at the Ibiza club for twenty years.

More names, including some Australian ones, will be added in the coming months.

Damian Gelle of T1000 Events tells TMN that most of the company’s events have “always had an element that’s come from Europe – particularly Ibiza where it all started.

“Space has visited Australia and done numerous shows but it doesn’t exist any more.

“Amnesia still does six nights a week on the island, and when the brand came my way, [I figured] it was something new for Australia and also something that every Australian should experience at least once in their lifetime.”

Amnesia made its name through wild parties, a massive sound system, hedonistic dancers, lasers and industrial Co2 cannons.

Gelle says: “Amnesia is held in a 5000-litre tank. It’s a monster!

“We can’t replicate that because safety rules in Spain are different from those in Australia [laughs].

“So we’ll be using multiple smaller cannons around the country to recreate a similar effect.

“We’re sourcing them at the moment. They’re hard to come by but there’ll be some arsenal.

“It will be the biggest ice cannon display that Australia will ever see!”

Amnesia will also use Electric Gardens’ sound system.

“It’s an inner-city festival. You can’t have the sound wandering. It’s got to be directional.

“It hits the crowd and diminishes soon after, rather than not hitting the crowd and wandering.”

Electric Gardens traditionally draws 15,000 to the Sydney show, in addition to sideshows in Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth.

The Amnesia area will hold 5,000. It will be one of the four massive stages for Electric Gardens.

Already announced are Underworld, Erick Morillo, Bag Raiders and Set Mo Feat. Woodes, Asta and Thandi Phoenix.
