The accolades have continued to pour in for Bohemian Rhapsody, with the acclaimed biopic scoring two big awards at this year’s Golden Globes.

Released back in October, Bohemian Rhapsody is a Bryan Singer and Dexter Fletcher-directed biopic that tells the story of English rock band Queen and its charismatic frontman Freddie Mercury. Despite a somewhat measured critical response, audiences have been loving the film, and clearly voting with their feet.

Just last month, it was revealed that the film had become the highest-grossing musical biopic of all time, grossing upwards of $700 million to date, and beating out the likes of the 2015’s Straight Outta Compton and 2005’s Walk The Line.

As Pitchfork now reports, the film has scored itself another huge honour, taking home the awards for Best Drama and Best Actor at the 2019 Golden Globe Awards.

Handed out at The Beverly Hilton on Sunday night, Bohemian Rhapsody managed to overtake other films such as Black PantherBlacKkKlansmanIf Beale Street Could Talk, and the successful A Star Is Born to take home the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture – Drama.

Likewise, Rami Malek’s stunning portrayal of Freddie Mercury was enough for the panel to award him he Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Motion Picture Drama. Malek’s role saw him beat out actors such as Bradley Cooper, John David Washington, Lucas Hedges, and Willem Dafoe to take home the honour.

During his acceptance speech, Rami Malek thanked Queen members Brian May and Roger Taylor “for ensuring that authenticity and inclusivity exists in music and in the world and all of us.”

Meanwhile, Malek dedicated his award to the late Freddie Mercury, who passed away back in 1991. “Thank you to Freddie Mercury for giving me the joy of a lifetime. I love you, you beautiful man,” he said. “This is for and because of you, gorgeous.”

While Rami Malek is undoubtedly on top of the world right now, Queen guitarist Brian May recently expressed his pride in Malek’s performance, stating that he believes the actor deserves an Academy Award for his portrayal of Freddie Mercury.

“He’s incredible. Without doubt he’ll be on the nominations list for an Oscar and well deserved as well,” May explained. “He inhabited Freddie to the point where we even started to think of him as Freddie. Really remarkable.”

“We’ve lived with this project for nine years and it’s incredible to see it doing so well,” May continued. “It came out to shitty reviews, as some of our work has before, but the public has embraced it magnificently.”

“Everybody gave 200%, from the actors and technicians to the production team and hair and make up, everyone. You don’t get any lukewarm responses. The guy who plays me should be getting awards all over.”
