Albums by Arctic Monkeys, Noel Gallagher, Florence + The Machine and Wolf Alice are among the 12 shortlisted for this year’s Mercury Prize.

With their fourth nomination, Arctic Monkeys are now the joint second most nominated act in the awards (next to PJ Harvey), which were set up in 1992 to find Britain’s most creative album in a 12 month period.

They at least won once, for their debut album Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not.

Radiohead take the top spot with five nominations but have never won.

The full list is:

Arctic Monkeys – Tranquillity Base Hotel & Casino

Everything Everything – A Fever Dream

Everything Is Recorded  – Richard Russell

Florence + The Machine – High As Hope

Jorja Smith – Lost & Found

King Krule – The Ooz

Lily Allen – No Shame

Nadine Shah – Holiday Destination

Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds – Who Built The Moon?

Novelist – Novelist Guy

Sons Of Kemet – Your Queen Is A Reptile

Wolf Alice – Visions Of A Life

Over 200 entries were made this year.

Although many on social media noted the commercial bent of the shortlist, eight of the 12 were released on indie labels.

The judges said the shortlist shared the belief that music was important, with most reflecting and/or confronting the world around them.

These included rightwing anti-immigration attitudes (Shah), powerful black women overlooked by history (Sons Of Kemet), struggle for confidence after a marriage breakdown (Allen), anti-violence (Guy) and stormy rites of passage (Smith).

Arctic Monkeys, Gallagher and Florence are 4-1 favourites at bookmakers William Hill, with Wolf Alice, Smith and Allen given odds of 6-1.

The winner will be revealed at Hammersmith’s Eventim Apollo on Thursday, September 20.
