The 20 most-played songs on Australian commercial radio in 2017

Those calculator wizards at AirCheck have revealed their list of the most-spun tunes on commercial radio in 2017, and not surprisingly, the list is dominated by Ed Sheeran – and acts who sounds an awful lot like Ed Sheeran.

First, a few takeaways.

No Aussies made the top 20 list. None.

Jess Mauboy’s ‘Fallin’ at #25 was the closest, while Lorde’s ‘Green Light’ was the closest under media laws, which dictate we claim the very best New Zealanders as Aussies, and dismissively shun the worse as Kiwis.

Also, this list is quite dude-heavy, with true blue Aussie Lorde being the only lady making an appearance in the Top 10. There are arguably more dominant female artists signed to major labels and making commercially-successful, innovative, interesting pop music, than ever before. There’s your green light, radio programmers! (We want it.)

Anyway, The Chainsmokers and Coldplay’s ‘Something Just Like This’ was the most-spun song, with 21,421 plays, from Feb 22 when the song was released.

Shawn Mendes’ ‘There’s Nothing Holding Me Back’ was only released on April 20, giving The Chainies (as you no doubt call them while crushing cans of VB) a two month head-start.

Of course, Ed Sheeran dominated radio — we knew this — with the third, fourth and seventh most played songs – a total of 79,609 spins across 48 commercial stations. I’m gonna say that’s too much.
